Taking the Rejection Letter All Too Seriously

A blog from New Delhi reports a suicide (pardon the typos) by an eighteen-year-old after finding out that she did not make it into the college she applied to.  She reportedly hung herself from a ceiling fan.  Rough… The only thing that police and family members can point to with regard to her suicide is her failing the second round of admissions.  Adding insult to injury (literally) her two friends who applied with her made it into the next cut-off.  I understand that the world is tough and Indians are brought up knowing that they must succeed, but this is way too intense.  What bothers me is that she couldn’t have been lead to this action by herself.  She must’ve been pressured by the school, or her parents, or other family members.  This is the problem I find with a lot of Eastern cultures, in that they are WAY too tough on their kids and if they do fail to succeed the first time, or the second, or third, hell is brought down on them, and that’s not cool.  Some kids can’t handle it, and this is how it turns out.  It’s depressing, and avoidable.  Someone should get on the horse and find out why this kid killed herself and realize it was mainly pressure by someone.
