College Rivalries Hit Facebook

Apparently going to football and basketball games to yell and scream and blow bullhorns just isn’t enough anymore.  The big universities are using Facebook to show their pride and perhaps gain some supporters in the wake.  Just recently there has been a bit of a rivalry about rivalries (that’s some pretty meta shit, right?) on Facebook.  Texas A&M is gunning for Louisiana State University for the most fans on their respective Facebook groups.  Texas A&M has claimed that it has the most fans and has left LSU far behind them with 69,034 fans.  LSU has now only a measly 65,751.

I really don’t think it’s too big of a deal who has the most fans, but I do suppose it gives the institution a bit more clout.  Since Facebook is so wildly popular among college students, and now everyone else, you may find that people will become more interested in Texas A&M or LSU.  As long as you make the headlines, you’re gonna be talked about.  As they say, any publicity is good publicity.  It may be a little far-fetched to think that this will bring in a substantial number of students, but it’s not entirely impossible.  I’m sure both universities are hoping that they’ll get more popular among prospective students, which will in turn give them a higher revenue.  Can’t argue with that!
