Students Must Jump Through Hoops For Spring Semester

In order for students under 22-years-old at Kansas State University to begin their Spring semester, they must take a course on the effects alcohol has on an individual.  The students are required to take a two-part course that deals with learning about the many aspects of drinking and alcoholism. From the Kansas Star,

‘The course is in two parts: New students who are 21 and younger as of
Aug. 1 have to complete an interactive two-hour alcohol education
program between the end of August and Sept. 24. The second, shorter
portion will be available 30 days later and must be completed by Nov. 2.’

I think this is an excellent idea for the university to take on.  Students, for the most part, are very unaware of the effects of alcohol and how to deal with peer pressure when it comes to drinking.  Students all over the country should be asked to participate in something like this.  I’ve found that many campuses are taking on programs like this to help their students, and I applaud that.  There should be an open forum for students to discuss this sort of thing.  They need to be honest about their habits without any sort of repercussions.  In order to get college students learning about alcohol the right way, there needs to be trust and openness.  It seems like KU is doing exactly that.  And thank goodness.
