Anti-Religious Sentiment by Varment Mascot Not Intolerable

At a recent Penn State football game, a player from the Penn State team arrives on the field, kneels down, and says a prayer for a good twenty seconds or so.  Disrespectfully enough, the mascot from the opposing team straight up mocks him. Goldy Gopher, from the University of Minnesota, has been reprimanded for his actions against the player.  And that’s really for the best.  It’s quite a nasty display.  I know how ridiculous it sounds to yell at a gopher mascot, but you have to have some respect for the other team, especially when it gets as personal as pregame prayer.  I understand that perhaps the Penn State player maybe should have been a little less obvious about his religious practices (e.g. pray in the locker room before the game), but he didn’t, and the last thing you do is mock him.  Someone from the University of Minnesota provided this explanation to the situation:

‘We have reiterated to Goldy the importance of exercising appropriate religious sensitivity in the future.’

Again, that is a silly way to put it, but the guy is an asshole, plain and simple.  This shouldn’t even be a topic of discussion.  Yes, mascots are supposed to get the other team’s goat.  Yes, they’re supposed to be stupid and annoying.  Yes, nobody takes mascots seriously.  That being said, they’re still a person on the field that ‘represents’ their team.  If you’re doing stuff like mocking the other team’s religious practices, someone is going to take notice and have a beef about it.  Here’s an amateur video of the offense:
