Everyone has their little tricks for getting higher grades on their exams. Usually they work well in high school, but tend to flounder a bit once you get to higher education. In short, you just need to study. Cramming hardly ever works, and pulling all-nighters is more detrimental than good. In order to get the results you want, you’re going to need to do a few very important things. You want to be able to get your studying done and get it done right. Lots of excellent advice comes from our friends over at Hack College. That’s the same case here. David Pierce discusses exactly what one can and should do in order to boots your marks:

Before Exam:

Study Out Loud

Condense

Sleep is Victory

During Exam:

Answer Everything the First Time

Re-read

Don’t Overthink

For more of an explanation about each bullet point, you should check out the post. Pierce has some excellent ideas to get you to your ‘A’s. You wanna get those grades so you can set yourself apart from others who will be graduating with you. I’ve talked about this before, and I can’t stress it enough. Set yourself apart from the pack. Yes, if you don’t do any of these things, you may scrape by, but you really should strive for greatness.

Wikipedia: the site where pretty much anyone can change anything pending the approval from some mysterious all-knowing panel of geniuses. Yes, Wikipedia has come a long way from his humble beginnings, but there still is a bit of a problem when it comes to colleges and universities creating their own Wikipedia page. The first word that comes to mind is, ‘biased.’ If I make a ‘Jared Catapano Wikipedia page’ I can pretty much say anything I want. I’m the authority on it. If I want to say that I can do 140 push-ups in one rep., then I can say that, whether it’s true or not. Or, for another example, if I make a Wikipedia page about Green Shorglab Stoofblatts, then I’m the authority on them. They’re my creation, and no one can say any different. That is, in essence, what these educational institutions are prone to do.

They’re not necessarily putting out false information, but it’s certainly swayed to one side. It’s not like anyone from the college is going to talk about any number of negative aspects of their institution on an informative page. It certainly should, though, and there’s the rub. If anyone is foolish enough to go to a school Wikipedia page in order to get their information (and I’m sure they’re out there) they should get an unbiased opinion. Hopefully something will change in this regard, but I doubt it. Though Wikipedia has the ability to censor this type of thing, but they probably won’t. For the time being, then, don’t take too much stock in what you read at a university’s Wiki entry. It’s probably mostly rubbish.

We all know about the Ivy League schools here in America: Cornell, Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and UPENN. I think that’s all of them… Correct me if I’m wrong. They’re prestigious and everyone wants to get in. Even if you don’t have the money, if you’re smart enough, you can get some scholarships or even a free ride. It sounds good, right?

China has decided to do something very similar. I guess they took a look at our system and figured that it was a good idea. It draws students in for the prestige as well as brings in a lot of revenue. You can’t beat it. Maybe this will jump start some sort of Capitalistic mind set for the Chinese. But, I wouldn’t hold your breath. These universities will probably profess the deep teachings of Communism. The league will be known as the C9 and will, ‘work together on graduate education and establish a credit system to allow for easy student exchanges and transfers.’ It sounds like a good idea, all in all.

There are only a few more days until the Halloween parties start. With Halloween on the weekend, you’ll likely be seeing parties on Friday and Saturday. If you haven’t gotten your costume yet, you might want to get yourself in gear. Of course, with the gap closing between now and Halloween night, it’s going to be tough to find a costume. My choice is always to simply throw something together from my closet. Gotta be creative when it comes to this stuff. But, if your closet is just full of Hollister shirts and Levis, you may need a little help throwing something together.

Hack College cites a few tips from an article in the San Francisco Chronicle. Whether you’re looking to do something completely original or an old standby, Hack College has some tips for you. In order to get exactly what you want, you’re going to have to open your mind up to a bunch of different ideas. Like I said, the stuff you’d probably need will be scarce at this point, so you’ve gotta think hard.

If you’ve come up with anything and you want to share it, shoot my an e-mail at Jared.Catapano@gmail.com and I’ll post it up here on Friday. I’d love to hear from you guys! Best of luck, and happy costume hunting.

Hope College in Holland, Michigan has reportedly disallowed Lance Black, screenwriter for ‘Milk,’ to join a roundtable discussion on sexuality. Now, Hope College has been associated since its establishment in the nineteenth century with the Reformed Church of America (an offshoot of Calvinism). If you know your religious history, that’s enough to make yourself a little worried. I’m no anti-Christian or anything, but it frightens me when religions of any sort are bothered by individual rights and opinions. As a result, the administrators over at Hope College have decided that though the students wanted Black to attend the discussion, they thought it wouldn’t be acceptable for a man with his ideals an opinions to talk about sexuality. Black is well-known for his acceptance of homosexuality and its lifestyle. The administrators, it seems, beg to differ.

Black will be attending an English class, but will not make any public appearances. After all this time and everything that the homosexual community has accomplished, they still can’t get advocates to speak at a LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOL? Yes, Hope is a private school, but it does focus on liberal arts. It is not necessarily a ‘Christian school,’ but it does hold on to old Christian ideals. Maybe that’s for the worst; especially in this case. If we can’t get passed someone talking about how homosexuality isn’t an evil, then we’ve taken many, many steps backward. Furthermore, if the students are the ones saying that they want the speaker, then they should be allowed to include him! It’s not like he’s a Nazi war criminal. And what are hey afraid of exactly? That he’ll turn everyone gay? … Probably. A spokesman for the college said that the administration was,

‘bothered by the idea that there would be “advocacy” in his talk.’

Bothered? Really? I guess the college has every right to accept or decline any speaker they wish, but this is ridiculous. Anyone else on my side about this one? Are we still that far in the dark about this??
