Lauren Starkey from The Examiner, well, examines who gets into college and why it happens in such a way. There are many, many factors that go into the admissions process that have absolutely nothing to do with a student’s merit or academic standing. Now everyone who is applying must deal with the older generations heading back to school. I’m all for it, personally. I think continuing one’s education at any age is a very intelligent move. But, unfortunately, it causes a bit of trouble for those who are applying as graduates and/or undergraduates ready to get their education [...]

In Indianapolis, there is a bit of buzz surrounding the nearly 200-year-old institution of Franklin College because lots of people are contacting them confused and upset. The reason being that there’s another ‘Franklin’ in town. Franklin University, which is based in Ohio, is opening up a new campus right in Indianapolis. Obviously, there’s a bit [...]

A ‘Conservative group’ at Bucknell University attempted to hold a bake sale on campus, but was shut down by the campus administrators. Seems pretty harmless, right? College rejection letters are something everyone has to deal with (or rather, you shouldn’t be friends with anyone who got into every school they applied to). But some schools are more tactful than others in telling you you’re not good enough. The WSJ has a great, if unscientific, survey of the worst rejection letter experiences.
File [...]

University of California at San Diego has made a bit of mistake on this day of days. This was likely the worst day for it. Applicants of UC San Diego received an e-mail from the admissions office declaring them accepted students for the Fall semester. It read,
‘We’re thrilled that you’ve been admitted to University of [...]

Yep, college admissions is as arbitrary and capricious as you’ve always thought it was. Pretty much just comes down to throwing darts at a wall full of names.
One current Ivy League admissions officer supports the “would I like to have a beer with this guy?” criterion, which probably explains as much about George W. Bush [...]
